A national network of resources and information about the Middle East

Free Allah Made Me Funny DVDs for Teachers
Unity Productions Foundation (UPF) is offering the documentary film Allah Made Me Funny free of charge to 100 high school teachers. The film introduces three Muslim comedians–Mohamad Amer, Azhar Usman, and Preacher Moss–who are attempting to use stand-up comedy to reintroduce their communities to the nation in a more positive, human way. They laugh–lovingly–at what they see as their own communities’ foibles and thus give “outsiders” a glimpse inside their lives and families.
The film enables students to see the Muslim ?other? in a new way and to then continue the learning through classroom discussion with one another. Watching the film in the classroom and then engaging in discussion allows students to explore new points of view and information about Muslims that they might otherwise be unable to experience.Teachers can participate in this interactive learning opportunity by agreeing to screen the film in their classroom during the 2010 spring period, from April to June.  Participating teachers are then made eligible for a sweepstakes to win a $100 gift certificate to Donorschose.org for classroom supplies.
The use of film in the classroom allows students to experience material that may challenge their preexisting assumptions in an engaging multimedia format. The discussion format designed for Allah Made Me Funny encourages students to grapple on a deeper level with the themes raised by the film.
There is no cost to participate in this project. However, there are a few requirements:
1.  Be a high school teacher – the film is relevant to a wide range of courses in social studies, civics, language arts and more.
2.  Show the Allah Made Me Funny DVD full length or in parts to your classroom by June 2010.
3.  Lead a discussion on the film’s themes with your students – optional lesson plans are available on the website.
4.  Fill out a brief 5-minute evaluation of your experience using the film as a teaching tool.
Teachers who agree to these terms may register by emailing Mahwish Chishty at UPF at outreach@upf.tv with your complete physical mailing address, the date you plan to screen the film, and the subject matter you teach.  If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact UPF at outreach@upf.tv, (202) 298-8088.
You will receive the DVD within 5 – 7 business days along with our newly created lesson plans that feature a discussion guide, exercises on stereotyping, Muslim diversity in America, and racial and religious profiling. Lesson plans for other UPF films can be found at http://www.upf.tv/teachers.
