Application for Middle East Studies Association Conference Travel Award

The Middle East Outreach Council (MEOC) is delighted to announce the availability of a limited number of $500 travel awards to provide support for MEOC members to attend the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) and the MEOC teacher workshop and business meeting on November 22-24, 2015, in Denver.
We have a very full schedule of events at MESA! This year’s full-day MEOC workshop for educators, Dimensions of Diversity in the Middle East
will be held on Saturday, November 21, from 8:30am-3:30pm, at the University of Denver. We will have content-rich sessions on topics including “Religious Issues in the Middle East,” ”Diversity in Middle Eastern Cities,” and “Minorities in The Middle East” with scholars Dr. Carole Woodall from The University of Colorado, Dr. Andrea Stanton from the Department of Religious Studies at The University of Denver, and Dr. Jonathan Sciarcon from the Department of Judaic Studies at The University of Denver. We will also have an interactive hands-on session and introduction to best practices and resources led by Middle Eastern expert and educator, Barbara Petzen. Participants will receive a packet of materials to use in the classroom. A light breakfast and a Middle Eastern lunch will be provided. Register for the workshop using the form here.
Workshop attendees will also get access to the MESA FilmFest
and the MESA book exhibit (held at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, 1550 Court Place, Denver.
The MEOC business meeting will be on Saturday, November 21, in PC-Plaza Court 3. We expect that, as in previous years, workshop participants and travel award recipients will be given free registration for the MESA conference on Saturday and Sunday. The MESA program includes a wide range of panels on Middle East-related topics, conference exhibits, and the ever-popular MESA FilmFest.
Eligibility and Requirements: An applicant must be a member of the Middle East Outreach Council and involved with teaching and/or outreach about the Middle East at any level. K-12 classroom teachers who have free access memberships will be asked to become paid individual members for $10 should they win the award. At a minimum, recipients will be expected to attend the MEOC workshop and business meeting. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to attend the MESA conference meetings. Recipients of the award will be asked to submit a short statement of how the award benefited them in their teaching and/or outreach work.
This award may only be received one time.

- Why do you want to participate in the MEOC Workshop and MESA conference and meetings?
- What qualifies you to be selected for the award?
- How will you utilize the knowledge gained from the MESA/MEOC meetings in your work as a teacher, administrator, or outreach professional?
In addition, you may include any of the following with your completed application.
- One letter of recommendation
- A record of community involvement in educational or international issues or activities.
- Evidence of serious professional or personal interest in international affairs.
